Strong opening for Van Helsing

Monster flick Van Helsing took an estimated $54.2 million (£30.3 million) in its first weekend in North America. The $160 million movie, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, opened on Friday. The film is tipped to become one of the summer's biggest blockbusters, despite mixed reviews, but is likely to see profits dented by next week's epic release, Troy. The premiere of the highly anticipated blockbuster Van Helsing is being held at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on Monday. The film's heroine, British actress Kate Beckinsale, will attend the screening along with the film's eponymous hero played by Hugh Jackman and Cracker's Robbie Coltrane, who plays Mr Hyde. Beckinsale wins libel damages

Kate Beckinsale has been awarded £20,000 in libel damages after a newspaper reported she missed out on her dream role as Barbarella. The Van Helsing star filed a lawsuit after the Daily Express wrongly alleged she was "heartbroken" that she was passed over for the title role in a remake of the 1968 movie. The first picture from X-Men prequel Wolverine has hit the web as star Hugh Jackman talked Adamantium skeletons, cage fighting and X-Man anger management with USA Today.
