Five men trapped in a mysterious basement room following a journey in an elevator tell each other their recurring nightmares in this formulaic horror movie. The film was adapted from William Gaines's terror comics, which would account for such bizarre section titles as Midnight Mess and This Trick'll Kill You. This was the sixth horror compendium made by Amicus, for a time Hammer's most formidable rival. British actors such as Terry-Thomas and Daniel Massey bring a touch of class to an otherwise pedestrian production.

Unfortunately I did not check the date of this film before ordering. It was a 1973 offering of tales from the crypt and it would fit more into the comedy genre than horror. It did however make me realise just how desensitised we have become over the past three decades with what we regard to be a good horror film. In its day, Vault of horror would have been a decent film to sit and watch with a curry on a Saturday night after a few double diamonds. The passing of time has not been kind to this type of film and although the storyline was reasonable, the horror wasn't horrifying enough by todays standards
Classic collection of horror stories here from the studios that brought you the excellent From Beyond the Grave, Asylum and The Beast Must Die. Here you have five stories that range from the gothic horror mixed perfectly with the obligatory comedy segment. I will not ruin any of the stories for you but my favs are the first (disturbing it is too) starring the excellent Daniel Massey and the second extremely amusing segment starring British legend Terry Thomas. While the final instalment shows the former Dr Who Tom Baker's acting talents outside of the Tardis perfectly playing a rather frustrated painter. A great film made by on the most underrated British directors, Roy Ward Baker. I can only wish Britain made them like this today... For Hammer horror and Amicus lovers everywhere. Please note the negative reviews obviously come from horror fans of today's poor effect laden tosh... this is how horror should be, atmospheric, damp, creepy and no reliance on CGI. A good example of a British Horror classic even without Cushing / Lee present.
