Most helpful review
highly accomplished film
By chungking (101 reviews) from London , 25 Nov 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This is one of those gritty, based on true events serial killer films. A complex, often ugly, sometimes sympathetic lead character, crosses Japan on the run like a force of nature, stealing money and murdering as he goes. A great performance from Ken Ogata. Theres a hint about what lead him to this life but its quite tenuous. Hes really a very bad man. The film also reflects on the lives of the people involved with him, his farther, wife and mistress, all good performances from the actors. Its a very visceral, rough, downward spiral of a film but at the same time very accomplished. It reminded me of the french film Robert Succo. Theres an introduction by Alex Cox which for anyone who remembers his moviedrome introductions, is well worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

(7)More slipping than gripping
By a customer from Devon , 24 Nov 2010Not a whodunnit, as the film begins with the killer's capture (a device which rarely works) and little of 'why' either, as it's merely a rambling retrospective account of dull murders mainly motivated by self-indulgence, greed and cruelty. Definitely not a thriller, with uninspired acting and only a few flashes of faint humour; bland cinematography means that it's a waste of a Blu-ray release.- Was this review helpful to you?

no entertainment value at all
By papatez (294 reviews) from folkestone , 10 Oct 2010it might as well have been a documentary, just a sequence of grissly crimes with no continuity other than a police interogation which provides an opportunity to flashback.- Was this review helpful to you?

Slasher Manic
By a customer from Midlands , 14 Aug 2008Out before Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer, this is obviously what that director saw before writing it.
One man's murder spree across Japan without a care in the world. Not fussy who he kills, or why, our protagonist seems decent on the surface, but is all anger underneath from a hard childhood seeing his dad humiliated by the military, partly for being a Christian.
The film makes no moral judgement, that's up to you. That's why this film can make the viewer uneasy. That and the fact the director jumps around the story and you are left to piece it together.
Worth a watch though.- Was this review helpful to you?

Customer Review
By a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008I was really disappointed in this film, having seen many recommendations. I think that the main problem was that the directors "masterful attention to detail" meant that some bits went so slowly that it became maddening. These lacunas were rarely relieved by anything but views of grey/brown interiors. Despite some attempt to bring in background, I never came to see the really nasty central character as anything but randomly horrible. The police were just a homogenous blur of grey suits. Only the father and wife of the killer had any real character, but this mainly comprised of sitting around looking at each other gloomily.
So, maybe the film is indeed a work of genius, but I missed it if it is. So I'd only recommend it if you are very attuned to this sort of thing.- Was this review helpful to you?
