We'll Meet Again
By FrankIV (506 reviews) from Cirencester, England , 10 Jan 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
There are a couple of surprises in the credits, with the distributing studio being Columbia and the associate producer George Formby, whatever that means, but this is just a decently enough made star vehicle for a popular singer. The plot doesn't really matter, the only reason for watching this is to see Vera Lynn and, even at this remove, it's easy to see why she was so popular. She's no actress, but she conveys an unassuming and extremely pleasant personality. Endearingly, heavy elocution lessons haven't quite obliterated the Essex girl intonations, adding to the general girl next door appeal. The singing voice, though, is extraordinary: rich and clear, if slightly nasal, in tone with good range and pitch, and the most immaculate diction you'll ever hear from a microphone singer, with the possible exception of Julie Andrews. No transatlanticism for Miss Lynn: it's clearly 'We'll Meet Again', not 'We'll Meed Again'. She can't, unfortunately, swing - I kept imagining what a rhythmic feast Bing Crosby would have made of a silly song such as 'Be Like a Kettle and Sing' - but on ballads, particularly her first rendition of 'After the Rain', she's superb. Worth watching, and not just for historical interest.- Was this review helpful to you?
