Splendid!!

This is my favourite version of La Traviata, with lavish settings and beautiful singing. I highly recommend it.- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Lovely stuff
By sandy666 (102 reviews) from Reading , 11 Feb 2013This is sumptuous treasure - the singing is excellent and the sets and costumes excellent. A wonderful film version of La Traviata (this is not a live stage version, but a filmed one). Both the lead roles - Placido Domingo & Teresa Stratus are brilliant. This film certainly made a very good evening in front of the telly.- Was this review helpful to you?

La Traviata
By a customer from Sutton , 23 Dec 2010I remember how I felt the first time I saw this back in 1982 - stunned and speechless. The effect wasn't as dramatic watching on the small screen at home, but it is a treat I have been waiting for years to repeat. I intend to buy the DVD to watch on a bigger TV next time!- Was this review helpful to you?

La Traviata
By Georgio (2 reviews) from London , 03 May 2009Absolutely beautiful. The costumes, the settings and of course, the music. My only criticism is that it is not convincing that the singers are actually singing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Fur coat and no knickers
By AllanPW (11 reviews) from Swansea , 26 Sep 2008Zefirelli loves opulence and here opulence triumphs over the emotional content. He cannot ever let the music and singing carry the story, there is always a tremendously obvious, and sumptuous, visual interpretation in front of your eyes, even for what is supposed to be off-stage narrative. The singing is excellent, but the acting mostly very limited, especially Germont's father, whose relationship with Violetta has little credibility. Given the over-emphasis on the mise-en-scene, it's a pity that it is economic nonsense - Violetta is an economic dependant, and in this version her situation in Act 3 is that of an impoverished aristocrat, not a failed courtesan - but a garret would have cramped Zefirelli's style!- Was this review helpful to you?
