The age of the newspaper reporter as crusading hero is given an excellent treatment in this biographical drama. Veronica Guerin (emphatically played by Cate Blanchett) was assassinated after writing a series of revelatory stories exposing the drug overlords who battled for control of Dublin in the mid-1990s. Like Erin Brockovich, Guerin pursued a moral goal. Unlike Brockovich, she paid the ultimate price for championing the truth. Her courageous story has already provided the inspiration for the 2000 film When the Sky Falls, which starred Joan Allen, but director Joel Schumacher's retelling is a superior affair thanks to Blanchett's star appeal. Colin Farrell also offers a sly portrait of a druggie informer and Brenda Fricker a poignant cameo as Veronica's mother, while Schumacher carries through the ripples of tension to terrific effect. This is certainly a headline-worthy report.

This film is a 'must see' for everyone. At times exciting, funny and weepy, it is made all the more poignant for being a true story. Superb acting by the ever-talented Cate Blanchett adds to the film's merits. The only downside to watching this film is that it can be slightly depressing - so best not to watch when you're already feeling low!
Another fab true life account, of a sometimes very foolish, brave, dedicated, determined woman. All aspects of the story I feel were fairly represented. I found myself admiring her at times but then asking myself why she would endanger herself in such a way? Her death sad for many, changed the underworld forever and that can't be bad. Cate Blanchett played a fab part and was equally supported well by all of the cast.
