This is the original 1940's film which spawned a series of remakes with various permutations of the same situation in the 80's onwards; But original is best and the use of elaborate language which seems relevant as it is set in 'public school' England provides a wonderful continuing source of great amusement. It was written by Peter Ustinov who went on to write and appear in many films and TV shows. The story involves the effect a stolen 'idol' from Africa has on its current owners... and the latest incident involves the exchange of personalities of a father and son , who are just about to separate for the boys term in public school. The father sees the tyrrany of the school and that his son was not faking his dislike of the establishment. The hilarious way the actors 'changed places ' was excellent and the young( at that time ) Anthony Newley and the experienced Roger Livesy were superb casting as the main characters but the whole cast played their parts with enthusiasm and to great effect .This film is a hidden gem...just like the idol in Africa.Do yourself a favour and rent this one..

utterly captivating - the photography and timing, diction and dialogue are alive, present, timeless, a work of art - prepare to be transported to a more elegant age than ours

This is a classic example where the filmmakers think they are funnier than the original material. If the humour in the opening credits starts to pall, give up, as it won't get any better.

  • An unexpected gem!

This film is about an unexpected gem - and that is what it turned out to be when we sat down to watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It is a hilarious Victorian pastiche mixed with a body swap comedy - think Freaky Friday but set in the 1890s. With sparkling lines of dialogue and excellent performances from the lead characters, including some of the best written titles I've ever seen, I am really surprised that this film is not considered to be the classic it undoubtably is.

The original and the worst. Even watching Lindsay Lohan act in the Freaky Friday re-make, is less irritating than the acting in this film.

You generally can't beat a good old body/life swapping film, however this film should be beaten to death.
