Most helpful review Vicky Cristina Barcelona

  • Woody Allen's best film in years

    [Highly rated reviewer]

After a spate of rather lack lustre films from Woody Allen’s comes this little gem. Great dialogue, with many laugh out loud lines delivered buy some stand-out performances from Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and our own Rebecca Hall, masterful direction of Mr Allen. I loved it and it was wonderful surprise.

  • Wouldn't call it a comedy

    Rated - 3.5 stars

I enjoyed this film, but I certainly wouldn't place in the comedy section. In the preamble blurb, it was referred to as relentlessly hilarious. I wonder if the critic was watching another film to the one I've just watched, because it wasn't hilarious, it wasn't even particularly funny. I would place it in light, romantic drama.

The two best actors in the piece were Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. The outstanding of them, Penelope.

The most outstanding piece of the whole film was the soundtrack by Guilia y Los Tellarini. Fantastic, one of those tracks that gets under your skin and you find yourself humming two days later.

  • One of his best

This is definitely one of Woody Allen's best films. I admit to not having seen all of them, especially his more recent films which critics seem to think are not as good as they used to be, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. There are some lovely comic moments and Penelope Cruz is wonderfully crazy. Javier Bardem is good to look at and suitably intense as the brooding artist. I thought fairly early on that Scarlett Johannson's character might change her viewpoint, as she did, but I also expected her friend to change hers too. She flirted with a new viewpoint but stayed with her original plans. And the music was good too.

  • Poor acting

In theory the plot seemed intriguing and the trailer further fools you into believing that. But the acting of some was incredibly poor, and Im naming and shaming Rebecca Hall mostly, with such wooden performance, it's shocking. Scarlet doesn't exactly lives up to her reputation, also finding her performance as sexually provocative as a panda bear! Javier is just about OK. But Penelope was spectacular, really passionate, very believable. I didnt understand the need for narration. I kept watching to find out what the girls are gonna do, but It was super disappointing at the end!

Very few laughs in the film (no idea what film the reviewer was watching) but still an intriguing film, make you smirk a few times and beautifully shot.......
