DreadfulBy benlavender (7 reviews) from Ruilsip , 18 Jan 2008I rented this film for my wife who loves rom-com. We both hated this dreadful excuse of a film. Gwyneth Paltrow has no comic timing. A comedy without laughs or grins. Even Mike Myers in small supporting role is unable to lighten the mood. The real fault is with the director and writer. Avoid like the plague.
An entertaining movie but a dangerous messageBy Gray2 (220 reviews) from London, England , 15 Jan 2008This is not a movie for feminists. Im referring less to the appearance of Gwyneth Paltrow and her two friends in the shortest skirts youve ever seen for almost the entire movie, than to the ultimate moral to the tale, about which more later. This is the story of Donna, a small-town girl (Paltrow), who reads an inspiring book and realises that even for one such as her the sky is quite literally the limit. Through hard work and sheer effort she attains her ambition of becoming a flight attendant. (Dont miss the fascinating documentary on the history of flight attendancy, incorporated on the DVD as a bonus feature.) But not just any old flight attendant; Donna desires and ultimately secures the prestigious New York to Paris route. And then chucks it all in. For a man. On the way we encounter interesting ethical dilemmas (what should you do when you discover your best friend is a thief and a cheat?) and not a little humour, verging on the slapstick (who can forget the infamous brawl between Donna and the aforementioned friend?). But its the enduring message that bothers me. Its NOT the Feminist Gospel, A woman has the right to make her own choice between Career and Family without expecting adverse judgment. Id wholeheartedly concur with that message. But this movie proclaims the POST-Feminist Gospel, A woman can have her cake and eat it. Reach the very top, annihilating anyone who gets in her way, and then quit without a word of apology to those whose time and effort (not to mention hard cash) helped get her there. What, I wonder, will be the plot for View From The Top 2? Will the government invest millions of dollars in turning Donna into a rocket scientist, or an astronaut, only for her to reach the top, chuck it all in, and then stay at home with four kids? The movie sends out a dangerous message, to young women in particular. So strongly do I disapprove of it, that I no longer feel any guilt at all, about ogling those six beautiful legs!
Loved it!By a customer from Swansea , 05 Dec 2007A lovely Rom Com, that ticks all the boxes. Paltrow and Ruffalo play their parts really well, and their relationship is very believable. Nice to see Berghen play a 'goodie' for a change!! If you like chick flicks that tick all the boxes, you'll love this one. A great feel-good film.
VIEW FROM THE TOP.By Cornetto (959 reviews) from Lancaster , 04 May 2007View from the Top - stars Gwyneth Paltrow , A comedy centering around Donna, a young woman who has dreams of becoming a first class international flight attendant, and is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that it comes true. The road to success isnt smooth and there are many ups and downs. It was fairly funny and light entertainment, fantastic if you cant be bothered to have to concentrate to much.
