Oh, the pleasures of Brando and Kazan! THE team! Kazan, the actor's director. Brando, the actor's actor. His only teacher, Stella Adler said modestly, 'Teaching Marlon to act was like teaching a tiger the jungle.' None better.
Note the New York stage 'Mexicans' in the cast strangely validating the self-conscious drama...I mean this in a good way. Also read up on the ethnicity of Frank Silvera, Margo, Henry Silva...and, of course, Anthony Quinn. Jean Peters is perfect as the girl-not-quite-next-door.
It's a fifties Hollywood film-feast. Having seen it umpteen times my mind comes back to the macho costumes, the horses, the canyon echoing 'Za-pa-ta', the terrible siren, the parading earnestness and corruption. Addictive stuff.- Was this review helpful to you?

Viva Zapata
By Ell1981 (169 reviews) from London , 06 Apr 2011The opening scene of this film was played by Werner Herzog at a talk I saw him do last week. It shows Brando at his best and sets the scene of the film and character beautifully. This is Brando in his prime but overall the film lacks a bit of direction which I found surprising given the stature of the Director (On the Waterfront, Streetcar..) However a worthy watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
