A nail-biting thriller with political clout
By Tinderbox from England , 21 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Henri-Georges Clouzot, director of both this film and the equally riveting "Les Diaboliques", is often confusingly referred to as the 'French Hitchcock'. While he shares Alf's ability to keep an audience on the edge of their seat, his ingenious masterpiece "The Wages of Fear" is far grittier and more despairing than even Hitchcock's most twisted output.
Set in oil-rich South America, Clouzot creates a hot, tense atmosphere of desperation with a group of unemployed outcasts who are trapped in a remote town and don't have the money to leave. Even Joe, a charismatic man in an immaculate white suit, is just as eager to follow his poverty-stricken companions into a seemingly suicidal money-making scheme.
This scheme, involving a long truck journey and a stockpile of nitroglycerine liable to explode at any moment, provides an incredibly exciting cinematic experience. Eschewing the pitfalls of Hollywood convention, Clouzot concentrates on the human element rather than the threat of a gigantic explosion. Masculinity, father figures and the spectre of American economic exploitation give this film a profound and elegiac depth.
Plus, you know, it's got MEN driving TRUCKS which could go KABOOM at any moment!- Was this review helpful to you?

By Bigeats (5 reviews) , 02 Apr 2013Seen first at age 19 and now 56 years later I still think it is a great edge of your seat movie. Another miss for the 'don't like sub titles moviegoers.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 07 Nov 2012It's a slow starter but develops into a seriously tense film! Interesting characters and you are taken on a very memorable journey with them.- Was this review helpful to you?

Holds your attention!
By GofWarks (60 reviews) from Radford Semele , 19 Aug 2012First half of the film was an attention holding drama. However the second half was great. Really suspenseful. Partly because the characters were believeable and the situation was believeable. It was the atmosphere that it created as well. You could imagine the heat and the flies.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dull plot, dull characters, grim setting. Not interesting at all.
By a customer , 03 May 2012Actually no stars for this film. I thought it was appallingly dull. I skipped through most of it having given the first half an hour my full attention and having hated every minute. Dull, dull, dull. Sorry!- Was this review helpful to you?
