This movie was my first encounter with Christopher Guest, yes I saw it even before Spinal Tap, and it is nothing short of BRILLIANCE. Why it has never been released here is unfathomable to me (I saw it in America).
All Guest's regulars come together in this 'documentary' that follows a small town community theatre production that believes it has what it takes to go to Broadway, if only the reviewer would show! Buy, rent, steel, fly to America, do what ever you can to see this film!
In my humble opinion this rivals Spinal Tap for the title of Christopher Guest's best work.
Following the Mockumentary style which earned his fame, 'Waiting for Guffman' is a hilarious (and on occasion quite touching) tale which follows the story of an Amatuer Theatrical Group, in the one horse town of Blaine, Missouri.
Christopher Guest plays Corky St.Clair a hilariously camp and syntheitically hirsuite director visting from New York. His queenie outbursts and creative ideas are pant wettingly funny and anyone with an experience performing in a school play or even a professional show will definately connect with this tale.
Many of the Christopher Guest regulars are in attendance, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard are superbly cringesome as the deluded 'Broadway Babies' and as ever Eugene Levy brings his extremely loveable and inimitable geekiness to the party (and a boss eye).
I really don't understand why this didn't get the same kind of release in the UK as The Mighty Wind and Best in Show - as I think this film is funnier and superior in every way.
