    [Highly rated reviewer]

Never a great fan of Mr. Branagh's stodgy Shakespearean stuff, though always impressed by his other acting, I was stunned by his performances as Kurt Wallander in what is definitely a role made just for him.

The supporting cast and direction are superb too. But even more amazing is the cinematography and incidental music, illuminating the lovely Swedish locations, and generating a tense and sometimes dreamy atmosphere, with evocations flooding my mind: a wonder of the small screen.

It is one of those rare television experiences that rendered me fully absorbed, as the audience is pulled into the scenes with an exquisite deftness by an ensemble of excellence.

This is the best detective drama series ever made and, with Edge Of Darkness (Bob Peck et al., 1985), one of the two greatest BBC TV dramas.

The way Wallander's troubled personal life is revealed with his melancholic introspections, is a tribute not just to Kenny's sublime acting but the searing scripts adapted from the excellent books of Henning Mankell, a writer who, take note Mizz Mediocre Riches Rowling, gives half his income to charity!

With few exceptions, and despite the BBC's pursuit of lightweight dramas and endless average costume dramas adorned by (mostly) celebrity actors and actresses (as distinct from real artists like Branagh), hopefully, this series will run forever....

    Happy viewing everyone.

  • A breath of fresh air for police dramas

I have watched both the Swedish original version and now the English version and was very impressed by both. If you don't want to read the subtitles then go for the English version. You wont be disappointed. They are both very dark, a breath of fresh air compared to US police dramas. More realistic at every twist and turn of the plot. Well done.
