If you like average over the top 'blockbuster' drivel, it's the movie for you!By cash00013 (4 reviews) , 15 Jan 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]Oh dear god, you just know this drivel will get award nods. The lead actor, Jeremy Irvine, CANNOT ACT! This drives me insane, no doubt he will be catapulted to stardom with mediocre (and I'm using that term generously) talent like so many others (Taylor Lautner anybody?) and people with GENUINE talent will lose out again. The first five minutes he stares blankly with his mouth gaping like his brain fell out!
My god what tripe. The score was ridiculous, the ginger Forest Gump character (Matt Milne) was laughable! It's only saving grace was the horses!
As usual, it's missed the point, tried too hard thus creating a ridiculously twee sickly eye rolling pile of annoyance. It could have been a fabulous movie, sadly, it really isn't!

a surprisingly good filmBy dorsetdaisy (3 reviews) , 04 Dec 2013Rented this for my husband and I was not looking forward to watching it but turned out to be a brilliant film .
Beautiful film!By Rory88 (6 reviews) , 28 Nov 2013I didn't really fancy this film but friends have raved about it to me so i thought I would give it a go. I sat down excpeting to turn it off after half an hour judging by some of the reviews on here. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!! I thought this was a fantastic film, i was gripped for the whole 2 and a half hours. It made me laugh and cry. It was a wonderful story about love and friendship. The actors were great as were the beautiful horses. I would say well worth a watch.
amazing horse ..By a customer , 21 Nov 2013Loved this film.. hate what happens to horses in war.. but this is an amazing story of the friendship and bond between a horse and the boy who raised him.. its a story of a special bond and a love that gets beyond danger...and how far that immense deep attachment..can bring those involved together through adversity. . I do feel that Spielberg does over dramatise the story..and in parts it is perhaps not entirely credible. .but I did however really enjoy the film and it does for the animal lovers. . Need a big box of tissus by your side.. I certainly did .

Maudlin - saved by cinematographyBy The_Fury (3 reviews) , 18 Nov 2013When I was a kid a favourite book of mine was 'The Butterfly Lion' by Michael Morpurgo. As is evident from War Horse, which I haven't read, it's skeleton is one Morpurgo recycles in that in both stories a boy develops a kinship with animal, they are separated, and dramatically reunited in France during WW1. In this film, Spielberg has attempted to re-create on screen the emotion that Morpurgo was able convey in the Butterfly Lion and, presumably, in War Horse. Except that I found it was maudlin to the extent of vomit-inducing and so hideously contrived that I couldn't take it seriously. Even the moment when the Frenchman surrenders the horse to our protagonist, has an inevitability which makes it difficult to care. For an at times watch-glancingly long flick the audience finds it difficult to understand the emotional attachment any other character besides Albert develops with the 'miracle horse' which I rather suspect the novel conjures. That said, the saving grace the cinematography, from the beautiful desolate landscapes of Exmoor, with that that astonishing sunset at the end, to the magnificent camera work around a harrowingly-reconstructed No-Man's Land, fully deserving of its Academy Award.
good but not greatBy farmfist (15 reviews) , 16 Nov 2013A good film but a better stage play. It seems too obvious in this version as its not sure whether its for a young audience or not. lacking in originality..
