Richard E Grant's great central performance as a witchfinder elevates this gory “bell, book and candle” tale to convincing heights. He's hunting warlock Julian Sands who, having escaped through a 1691 time portal to present-day LA, is looking for a Satanic bible to help him destroy the world. Slasher veteran Steve Miner's assured direction keeps everything exciting while unusual plot twists maintain a level of constant surprise. A kind of necromantic Highlander with superior special effects that's both bewitching and absorbing, it unfortunately spawned a couple of lame sequels.
