Slow, Serious, Sad, Worthy, Beautiful

I want to love the films of Deepha Mehta, I really do. I loath the Shiv Sena and my heart goes out to all the unfortunates, and all the women subjugated by 'religion' (so-called). But Water - like Earth and Fire before it - is a deeply ponderous film with dainty, subtle, lovely imagery but no substance, no story, no characters, and it's not at all appealing in its execution. The acting is fine - the little one especially - and the cinematography is super, but one is bored when one should not be. In some ways it's very Bollywood - the 'spectacled' intellectual; sensitive he is, if not quick on his feet, the hooker with the heart of gold - soooo happy to sacrifice. Mehta both hates and loves the Hindu psychosis; therein lies the problem; the contradiction.
In summary, a worthy film that should be made and a story that should be told, but not a well communicated film.- Was this review helpful to you?

worth to watch

I’m not familiar with India or it culture and it was worth to watch and learn, especially the acting of the little girl was wonderful.
On the other side, I found the movie hard to follow, as some of the dialogues are not that clear and part of them in Hindu. May need to be add English subtitle option for all the movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Awful, pretentious, waste of £2.49 - DONT WATCH!

Having watched and absolutely loved both Fire and Earth, I was looking forward to viewing Mehta's final film in her trilogy on gender and Indian identity. The caste looked strong, I had read the synopsis and I was looking forward to a night in watching a first-class movie. However, right from the first scene through till the last I was continually appalled by the wooden performances, shockingly pretentious dialogue and complete lack of authority with which this story is told. What on earth went wrong Mehta?? The characters are so pretentious, so worn out, one-dimensional and cliched. The film also has some of the possibly worst ever characters I have come across : the flute playing romantic knight in shining armour who falls in love with a widow (Abraham) and the pious beauty who is 'somehow' caught up in prostituting herself for the upkeep of the widows (Ray). Oh please - are we watching Pretty Woman?? No! We are supposed to be watching an intelligent gender-sensitive, political and complex representation of Indian women caught up in patriarchal and religious small mindedness. This film is worse than anything I have watched in a long time. Don't bother with this one.- Was this review helpful to you?
