LOVEFiLM Review
-
By Jonathan Crocker from LOVEFiLM
Despite moments of hilarity, Italian director Nanni Moretti's comedy ultimately does not live up to its promise.

Feels Good
By FrankIV (504 reviews) from Cirencester, England , 09 Apr 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a warm and rather gentle film about a newly elected Pope who refuses the nomination. There's lots to enjoy, like the psychoanalyst brought in to help but somewhat hampered by having to accept the non-existence of the subconscious mind and not being able to ask questions about relationships with parents, sex or dreams. Particularly enjoyable are the organisation of inter-cardinal volleyball teams and a one man performance of Chekhov. The film has been criticised for being too soft, neither hilarious nor cynical enough, but it doesn't seem to me as if either hilarity or cynicism were intentions. Take it as it is, however, enjoy Michel Piccoli's bemused and rather loveable Pope-elect, and it's a rewarding experience.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)Strange film
By a customer , 24 Apr 2013This was a strange film. I did not mind it but other members of the family hated it! Rather slow and somewhat disjointed storyline. The funniest bits- the very few funny bits are in the previews I have seen of the film so if it is comedy you are after, this probably is not the film for you.- Was this review helpful to you?

prophetic and utterly charming
By xxxxx (4 reviews) , 22 Mar 2013This is Nanni Moretti at his best with a prophetic and a moving story. Those who did not like this film may have struggled with appreciating the Italian style of humour and sarcasm; otherwise, this is one of the best movies of the last decade. The screenplay is ingenious and the acting is excellent. The cinematography is aesthetically very engaging without becoming overburdening cinema dauteur; and Moretti badgering cmon Latin America, you can't quit now, you are the revelation of the tournament encapsulates the witty surrealism of this fantastic film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Really Good
By buffyrules (335 reviews) from southend on sea , 24 Jan 2013Engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. Some have said given the subject matter it was too light but I disagree and commend the bravery of the film makers for taking this on. Well acted and paced throughout. Sure it's not ground breaking but apart from that it's faltless.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't choose me for Pope!
By sabre17 (4 reviews) , 15 Dec 2012Nanni Moretti is, as usual, on good form here. I love the way he defies genre, and bravely troops an atheist into the Vatican to teach the cardinals volleyball. I wish I could do that. That summarises what the film does thematically too: it muses on the serious through a characteristically whimsical viewpoint. He is a very human director, and as normal by the end of the film you feel as if you know all the characters personally. And no, I don't think I'd want to be the pope either!- Was this review helpful to you?
