A good performance can carry a movie only so far and while Joaquin Phoenix is never less than watchable and on occasion brilliant, the script lacks structure, the direction is a bit unfocused and Mark Wahlberg does another variation on his 'look ma! no facial muscles' style of acting. There's a really good movie buried in here somewhere and it's frustrating to only catch glimpses of it. Not to say it's not enjoyable - it certainly has its moments - but keep your expectations on a tight leash, I'd say...
