Weird Science

Gary Wallace is at high school. He's not very athletic and not at all popular, especially with the girls. It's Friday night and he and his pal Wyatt are popping corn and watching videos. Inspired by a clip from Frankenstein they decide to see whether they have the power to produce another human being according to their specifications. With the help of their computer, fed with pictures of gorgeous centrefolds and wired up to all sorts of household gadgets they get some weird science going! The noise is deafening, there's thunder and lightning, a heavy rainstorm, and Gary and Wyatt are scared witless... and then she appears. Lisa is beautiful, steamy, breathless and the answer to every man's dream. She has materialied for Gary and Wyatt, not to be a genie, but to adjust their lives. And with many wonderfully funny situations and a great soundtrack, Lisa turns Gary and Wyatt from zeroes into heroes.

The worst of John Hughes's early comedies, but still a cut above most teen fodder of the time. Hughes regular Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith are the sex-obsessed hi-tech anoraks who summon up the computer-generated woman of their dreams (Kelly LeBrock). Hughes remains a sharp observer of teenage woes but this time around there is a crassness to much of the humour and far too much time is spent leering. The best performance comes from Twister's Bill Paxton as Mitchell-Smith's fascist brother, and look out, too, for an early role for Robert Downey Jr.

    Classic Teen Movie

This is one of the all time classic teen movies. Kelly LeBrock was every teenagers (infact every mans) dream woman and the nerds in the film managed to create her to the envy of all of their friends.

The gags come fast and are hilarious.

If you want a light hearted film with lots of laughs then this is the film for you.

Not many films feature a teenager with a bra on his head looking serious.

John Hughes: “Don’t you… Forget about me.”

    • 11 Aug 2009

First Michael Jackson and now John Hughes. For those of us who were still growing up in the 1980s this summer is a rude reminder that we’re all getting older, and faster than we thought. Hughes – who died from a heart-attack last week at the age of 59 – can’t really be compared to Jackson in terms of fame or artistry. Most people probably never saw a picture of him before this week. But don’t underestimate Hughes’ impact on those teenagers who would turn... Read more
