One of my favourites---and still a really gripping films of what might have happened to a lovely England of that era
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 04 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Directed by Cavalcanti at Ealing, this is one of my favourite films. So the the review rating is subjective ( I think , objectively, it would probably rate 4 Stars).
But, whether 4 or 5 Stars, it is a crackin' good film which must have had audiences on the edge of their seats when it was released at a time when invasion of Britain was still a possibility.
It brings to life a simple part of rural England , in a lovely nostalgic bygone era.
And it shows how an evil force , if it had succeeded, could have seen us all speaking German today !!
Despite its age and low budget production, this remains a gripping and enthralling film which, in spite of all the deliberate propaganda----which was so necessary then),is a real gem of a British film.
Very Highly recommended- Was this review helpful to you?

(29)Love it
By Barneybee (16 reviews) , 22 Jan 2013Loved this film, a true classic/oldie. It has the typical war time progaganda that one would usually expect from this age of film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Under-rated gem.
By gdt1967 (2 reviews) , 12 Aug 2012A great film, even though it was made as war-time propaganda. The demonisation of the Germans is a tad distasteful, but in keeping with the reason it was made.
A must see for fans of The Eagle Has Landed, with which it shares many plot points, and anyone interested in the history of Ealing films.- Was this review helpful to you?

Well within the 'Ealing Comedy' constellation
By MikeyMouse (39 reviews) from West Drayton , 06 Oct 2011For fans of the old Ealing Comedies I'd point out that although this film is catagorised as an 'Action/adventure & Thiller', it is still made up of a merry crowd of delightful, lovely comic performances very much in the Ealing tradition. There's slapstick, with a good deal of Dad's Army type situations and mild farce, but of also the subtle voice of the propagandist that suggests one laughs at, not with, these hapless characters. The danger is England and its dreaming spires might be caught napping by the Jerry. I suppose it served the wartime purpose that the enemy is quite kindly portrayed, not demonised, in fact literally memorialised in the story, this leaving the Britons the a righteous moral high-ground in the end. The veteran cast exude comic intelligence.- Was this review helpful to you?
