(19)Like a Dream...
By SirFrogstar (1 review) from Nottingham , 11 Nov 2012While some might criticise this film for its use of stereotypes (angst filled musical numbers, the gay lead character playing a fairy in the school play to name but a few..) you need only take the time to look past its not so subtle exterior to realise the true beauty of this film.
'WTWM' is a magnificent blend of irony, and symbolism, adding a new twist to one of Shakespeare's most heralded works 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'. It explores the difficulties of living as an openly gay teen in a closed minded town. Through a magical journey instigated by his drama teacher, Timothy seeks to turn his town gay for the day, in the hopes that it will teach them to accept that love is love.
I particularly enjoyed how the Timothy's mother explained how she 'came out of the closet every day too' - exploring the largely unspoken theme of discrimination of those with LGBT family/friends.
My only criticism of this film would be that some (not all) of its characters could have benefited from a bit more screen time! The ending also avoids languishing over the typical happy ending cliché (and actually glosses over what would be the happiest conclusion of the film). Some might see this as a refreshing change, but I am a hopeless romantic and was dying to see a bit more of how things panned out!
With its many metaphors and trance like dreamy musical numbers, I would definitely recommend watching this film twice!
Filmed on a very low budget, and with a stellar cast, Were The World Mine proves that big blockbusters aren't the only productions that can capture your imagination!- Was this review helpful to you?

Superb, if only the world was really was this loved up
By a customer , 31 Jan 2012Modern day movie meets Shakespear beautifully intertwined. Supported by a suberb cast with great singing voices and nice eye candy.
Original, funny, sexy, nicely paced and directed. One of the best moves I have seen. A feel good classic not to be missed whether you are straight, gay or somewhere inbetween.- Was this review helpful to you?
