A film about musicals more than anything else
By McClennan (424 reviews) from St Helens , 11 Feb 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
A simply unbelievable transfer of a broadway hit onto screen and I can't really say much more other than in the musical genre this is one of the very best that I've seen. The part of Tony was pretty wooden but apart from the dancing, score and sets were amazing. All I'd heard before watching this was that it was Romeo And Juliet set in New York but it's far more than that. Immigration, corruption, racism, mixed race relationships, social disorder, rape and love are all mixed in, however this film is about musicals first and foremost and is definitely one of the best of this kind that I've seen, far better than Singin' In The Rain- Was this review helpful to you?

(55)Still Holds Up
By a customer , 24 Mar 2013West Side Story is one of those films that has passed me by. Although I am not a huge fan of musicals WSS is so famous all the songs are well known. For the opening 15 minutes or so I was concerned that the film would be a bit corny and dated. This was true to a degree but considering the film was released in 1961 it stood up well and hit some relevant points still around in today's gang culture.- Was this review helpful to you?

wonderful musical
By denis007 (132 reviews) , 02 Dec 2012Beautiful music by Leonard Bernstein, songs are beautifully interpreted throughout the movie, wonderful dancing, but the story ended on a sad note. It was somewhat expected to happen because of the tension existing between the two groups and the violence that aroused between the two groups, which was very well portrayed by the actors. To watch again and again and again.- Was this review helpful to you?

Musicals don't come better than this!
By Valiant016 (52 reviews) from Lytham St. Annes , 06 Jun 2011Great music, great choreography, great story, just great!
My favorite scene is where Tony & Maria meet at the dance and every one else fades away! Cleverly done, they are both happy, but of course the happiness goes, when the world 'returns'.
Shakespeare wrote the original, I think he would have enjoyed this version!- Was this review helpful to you?

This is not an upbeat happy musical
By a customer , 08 May 2011Having heard much about this I was disappointed. Yes it was gritty, poignant and if ever you wanted to teach a message to young people about the reality of gun gang and knife crime this is an ideal film.
Some of the dance routines were beautifully and energetically choreographed - eg on the rooftop 'I want to be in America'.
However, I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and some of the songs were really annoying.- Was this review helpful to you?

A CLASSIC TO WATCH AGAIN AND AGAIN
By venezuela (157 reviews) from Isleworth , 05 Jul 2010This is just one of those classic musicals that has to be watched. The musical score, dancing, acting and wonderful cast cannot be disputed. If you rent this it will only make you want to buy the DVD as I will be doing myself. It is very sad of course, so don't forget the tissues.- Was this review helpful to you?
