What is it about the Americans? They produce so much high quality drama. The West Wing is intelligent, witty, profound and superbly well acted and directed. The US must be wishing that Jed Bartlett could be the real president.
After four seasons of the best written TV show ever imported from the states. I sat to watch season five of The West Wing with trepidation as I was informed by many that after Aaron Sorkin's (the show's creator and genius writer) departure last season that this season went downhill in terms of writing and character structure.
However the first half of this season is actually fantastic especially an episode called Shutdown which is Martin Sheen at his best. There are problems, as always it can be tricky to understand what is going on politically and the writers have despenced with the sillyness of previous seasons. The characters are very obviously going somewhere with not so subtle character progression ('Leo, you don't look well.' 'I'm bored with my job' Donna). I am also disappointed with Rob Lowe's 'replacement' Will, I like him but he is soon shunted away and causing trouble in camp. There are some experimental episodes toward the end of the season (CJ's Full Access) which are interesting to see but unnesasary.
Overall a great slice of intelligent TV from the yanks but it is worth re watching earlier seasons to remember just how fantastic this show can actually be!
