Ghastly love-after-death fantasy, with Annabella Sciorra as a suicide consigned to her own private hell, and Robin Williams as her dead hubby, a car-crash victim, consigned to his own painterly paradise, but forsaking it to be reunited with the love of his life — and death. Vincent Ward, director of The Navigator — a Medieval Odyssey (1988) and Map Of The Human Heart, (1992) brings his usual visual style to this tosh and as a result the film looks wonderful. But that's all that is wonderful about it as, visuals aside, this is slow and sentimental slush, with Williams at his mawkish, sincere worst.

  • Hollywood's brand of warm, huggy theology gets ever stranger: heaven here is a gooey oil painting, psychobabble is the angelic language, there's no deity in view, and the occupants can't wait to leave the place and get back to Earth. The mind boggles.

    I cried me a river...

Some folks might be put off by the dark subject matter, and at times it is. But the film is well balanced between moribund and uplifting, and not all the tears are ones of sadness. The acting is fairly good, though I have to say that Cuba Gooding was excellent, as were the special effects that added depth to the movies premise without putting all else in the shade. You'll cry... you'll laugh, you might even be caught out by the odd surprise: but you'll never be bored. When I pop my clogs I know where I want to go

no religions and no polotics! just great acting and a passionate story line

this is by no means an 'easy watch' movie. it is filled with tons of theological content as well as more tear jerking moments than 'ghost' 'titanic' 'field of dreams' and 'armaggedon' all combined. williams is taken on an afterlife rollercoaster, exploring limbo heaven and pergatory in the name of love and justice. if you have ever raised the question of 'where do we go when we die?' then watch this film for a great perspective on the afterlife. this is a rather minimalist cast as there are few main characters, which is fine as the characters we have are well thought out and portrayed with a sense of real passion and realism i need say no more than saying 'one of cuba gooding jnrs finest performances'. i am a huge fan of robin williams and this just gives us another glimpse at what the great man is capable of doing. he only has one oscar under his belt and that was for best supporting actor in good will hunting. however, if, like me, you feel this is an injustice after such performances in 'dead poets society' and 'good mornin vietnam' fear not as there is a rumour currently circulating that williams is set to go onboard for another, as yet unamed, drama showing his versitility....as long as it isnt another 'insomnia' then i will be hoping for great things. all in all an amazing actor starring in an equally amazing film

have those tissues handy and prepare to experience a thought provoking and visually fantastic film.
