In order to save his emotionless, all-male race from extinction, alien Harold (Gary Shandling) travels to Earth to find and impregnate a mate. Posing as a banker, Harold's attempts to romance members of the opposite sex all fall flat due to his tactless chat up lines. After a colleague advises him to cruise an AA meeting, Harold finally meets a woman who is prepared to date him (Annette Bening). They soon wed, and Harold proceeds with his plan to produce a child. However, his unusual behaviour has already aroused the suspicions of an FAA official (John Goodman) and a sleazy co-worker (Greg Kinnear). How long will it be before Harold's true identity - and purpose - are discovered?

Near perfect restrained comedy

Gary Shandling and Annette Bening are superb and are perfectly cast. (Only an ageing Linda Fiorentino seems miscast.)

Some killer lines - not least Ben Kingsley's "You appear intelligent, but when you open your mouth, the effect is spoiled" (delivered in an ultra-English accent).

Some great visual comedy - especially Shandling's character wacking his humming penis at the airport.
