Following the success of Don Juan, Warners reteamed director Alan Crosland and the mercurial John Barrymore for its third feature to benefit from a synchronised Vitaphone soundtrack. But it wasn't the prospect of a score and some sound effects that prompted audiences to flock to this reworking of Abbé Prevost's classic novel, Manon Lescaut. They wanted to see Barrymore's French aristocrat wield his sword in defence of Dolores Costello, who'd been exploited as a courtesan by her wicked brother, Warner Oland. They got their wish, as well as the bonus of a (revised) happy ending in New Orleans.
"...It's a first class production, accentuated by fine performances and an unflinching script....Ryan has one of those rollercoaster roles that demands attention..."
Meg Ryan gets to vacate a bit of the fluffiness from her star persona in this one and shows that she can definitely act a little. She goes through a bit of a transition in this movie. We get Meg being kinda cute with that familiar impish twinkle in her eye to begin with, then we find her stash of vodka hidden in really badly conceived hiding spots around the house, then shock!!! horror!!! Meg starts stumbling home from the pub after work DRUNK, swears at everyone DRUNK!!!, falls out of the shower DRUNK and smacks her child DRUNK. Pretty heavy stuff.
To be fair Meg's good, but Andy Garcia steals the show (how is he not a bigger star???) as her Airline pilot husband who has to try to pick up the pieces of his wifes excesses (try not bringing home the duty free for your wife Andy, that might help).....And I guess that's it, nicely acted, but nothing new in terms of general plot...
Not a light hearted film. ............... I would only recommend this to people with this problem. ............... It tackles alcoholism head on especially with some not so pleasant views of Alice's alcoholism.
