When Harry Met Sally

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... tracks a star-crossed pair as they repeatedly drift apart and meet again over a span of 13 years and gradually fall madly, deeply, passionately into friendship, a friendship ever teetering on the edge of love. Harry meets Sally when they share a car ride to New York City upon graduation from the University of Chicago. A few minutes into the trip, the conversation between womanising, neurotic Harry (Billy Crystal) and driven, equally neurotic Sally (Meg Ryan) becomes heatedly contentious. The question arises: Can a man and a woman be just friends

Essentially concerned with the several meetings and partings of two college graduates over a decade or so, as life and love take their toll, this romantic comedy argues the question whether men and women can ever have friendship without sex. In truth, the movie, with its glitzy New York locations and beguiling soundtrack of popular standards, offers a cutesy, superficial and glamorised excursion into Woody Allen territory, but triumphs nevertheless as expert and irresistible escapist entertainment. The teaming of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal is perfect, while supporting stars Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are outstanding and add a welcome suggestion of edge. The fake-orgasm-in-a-deli set piece propelled Ryan into stratospheric stardom, but there are numerous other pleasures to be found in Nora Ephron's Oscar-nominated screenplay and Rob Reiner's astute direction.

    Victim of Hype??

Didnt quite get what all the fuss was about to be honest - think tis a victim of its own hype. Meg Ryan was good, as always, but I think Billy Crystal let the film down. It was a fab script and could have been a great film if you cared about the Harry character, but Crystal acted the whole film as though bored and made it difficult to care about what happened to him. I'm thinking - No Sally, go and find someone a damnsite more interesting!!

Here’s a litmus test for young lovers. If you believe that men are more interested in sports than fine dining (particularly if it’s mud wrestling)… that they’re more likely to be interested in you if you’re not interested in them… and that a short relationship is the only honest relationship, then you’re already on the same wavelength as Mike (Gerard Butler), the straight-talking cable TV sex therapist who passes for the hero in this mediocre romantic...
