A companion piece to I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, this is a less obviously comic and far more sensual study of lesbian awakening from Patricia Rozema. From its contrived beginning, the romance follows along overly familiar lines, in spite of a soaringly seductive hang-gliding sequence. But the performances of tempestuous circus artist Rachael Crawford and prissy Protestant academic Pascale Bussières give it a sensitivity and truth to match its rising passion. Good-looking, intense, serious drama of sexual confusions that founders on overwrought dialogue and its failure to explore the issues of morality and individual choice it raises; its attempt at magic realism, reinterpreting the myth of Cupid and Psyche, i
I wasn't expecting such a superb film. Normally lesbian films of this era are lacking (everything). This one is not.
Basically the plot is: straight teacher meets gay performance artist (her routine was great!) and they fall into a lava hot affair.
Sounds weird, I know, but it's not
Acting is excellent. The script spot on. The two leads have AMAZING chemistry together - erotic, beautiful and more importantly, HOT.
The cinematography is also really good. I wish all lesbian films were like this, but they are not.
I wasn't sure what I would be getting here but it turned out to be an erotic masterpiece. It had everything, great acting, sincere performances, great understated direction AND was truly erotic. Superb film.
