Football and cinema have never been the best of bedfellows — just look at 1981's Escape to Victory. However, anyone who can look back nostalgically at Roy of the Rovers will lap up this unashamedly clichéd rags-to-riches tale. Sean Bean, an outspoken fan of Sheffield United, obviously relishes every minute of his role here as the working-class lad who is plucked from obscurity by wise old talent scout Pete Postlethwaite to play in the big time. Along the way he wins and loses his mentor's niece (Emily Lloyd) and even gets the chance to indulge in some Rocky-style training. As BBC football pundit and former England and West Ham United midfielder Trevor Brooking might say: Predictable going forward, but there's the odd flash of brilliance.
Risible drama that lacks all credibility, though those who dream of scoring a hat-trick on their debut may enjoy it.
great film. the nakedness was kinda scary though.
Ok, this is the same old story retold by hundreds of films over and over again, however for some reason its a great film.
Basic story, man wishes to play football for his childhood heroes, Sheffield United. He gets his break but screws it all up. He works hard and somehow gets another chance, and makes the most of it and gets signed. He makes his debut against the strongest club in the world in the cup semi final and scroes the winner. Fairy tale stuff really.
I don`t know what makes this great for me. Perhaps its Sean Bean. Perhaps its the fact I lived in Sheffield and understand what United means to the fans. Perhaps its something else. I don`t know. Whatever it is I would recommend watching this film, twice if you can. O, yes, included is the steroetypical boy meets girl story included.
Football and film fans are well known for arguing over all-time lists - so it was only a matter of time before pollsters combined the two. As such we can now reveal that "Escape to Victory" is officially the greatest football film of all time. In 1981, double Oscar winner Michael Caine teamed up with Oscar nominated Sylvester Stallone, they were joined by FIFA's player of the 20th Century (Pele) and the man many consider to be the finest defender of all time (Bobby Moore), and a film...
