When the Boat Comes in was huge at it's time of screening , very rarely (if at all, I'm not sure) repeated on British terrestrial tv, the show was repeated a few years ago on UK Gold, it is basically the story of Jack Ford, a working man with asperations to become part of the money set so dispised by most of the people he grew up with, the North East of the Jarrow marchers and fledgling unions, Jack himself gets his foot on the rung of the capitalism ladder by becoming a union leader.James Bolam plays Jack with such charm and confidence that even though he shows very little loyalty to the people around him, you can't help but root for him, and hope that all his dastardly plans and schemes come off. Although James Bolam dominates the entire 4 series of this show there are many outstanding performances to back him up, noteably the entire Seaton family, Jessie the spurned love of Jacks life, Billy the doctor with a social concience and ma and pa seaton who's home spun philosophy could be fiercly brutal, but usually got the message across. All in all this show should be watched by the modern tv execs, producers and commisioners, if Britain could still make shows like this, we would still be seen as the best television drama producers in the world, instead of producers of weak plotted badly acted drivel, mentioning no names, ok, bad girls and footballers wives, I recommend anyone to watch this show, just to see what British tv used to be capable of.
I watched this series when it first screened and still find the acting directing sets and most of all and most importantly the story to be totally first rate. Whatever you might think of Jack Ford he has my vote as a Working Class Hero and a very bonny lad!
I wish there were stories as good as this on T V today. Also I think that some of the stories should be included in history lessons as part of 20th century study.
A very big thank you to all who made this series and especially to James Bolam brilliant casting and super acting by another bonny lad!
