It's a stunning, shocking premise: after heavy rainfall, the drains in an American town throw up a gruesome find — a bag containing the severed hands of children. And although writer/director Michael Cohn doesn't quite manage to sustain the chilling horror of the opening scenes, this remains a gripping serial killer thriller, as psychological expert Ally Walker follows the murderer's trail to an autistic child who may hold the key to the case. While unashamedly influenced by The Silence of the Lambs, this remains an under-rated gem and Cohn draws out a fine central performance from Walker. It was followed belatedly by a formulaic sequel.

Intriguing, but too many loose ends

A really excellent start and a good build up - intriguing story line and convincing characters - but the ending is a disappointing descent into cliche. You will watch it through, but you will probably wonder why there are so many loose ends - especially what personal trauma has made the female lead the awkward confrontational character she is: there is one startling hint which should have been followed up or else removed from the film altogether. An interesting movie which could, and should, have been another Silence of the Lambs. It isn't, by a long way, because of a failure to follow -through and the unwise decision to impose a feel-good ending.
