A darkly satirical and deeply affecting tale, WHEN THE WIND BLOWS concerns the final days of Jim and Hilda Bloggs, an elderly couple living in the remote Sussex countryside, whose almost romantic, rose-tinted memories of World War II are put into sharp relief when they are faced with the threat of a new war and an impending nuclear attack on the British Isles. With unwavering faith in the government, Jim prepares for the assault relying on advice contained in various local council- and government-issued pamphlets, naively disregarding the errors, inconsistencies and omissions of vital information. Hilda, meanwhile, goes about her daily housework, convinced that everything will be okay and “it will all be over by Christmas”.

Adapted from the Prix Goncourt-winning novel, La Loi, by Roger Vailland, this is a classic case of a film being ruined through commercial interference. Jules Dassin was about to begin shooting (from what he considered the best script he'd ever written) when the backers insisted he cast Marcello Mastroianni and Gina Lollobrigida to protect their investment. Thus, an intense study of the misuse of power in a patriarchal southern Italian community is transformed into an imbalanced star vehicle, in which La Lollo's feisty maid turns the tables on a coterie wrapped up in its sinisterly dictatorial parlour game.
Cartoon picturization of a popular book; the film was less likely, despite its merits, to find an audience.
If you went to school during the 80s they you may have been forced to watch this in one of your school room classes. This cartoon is awe-inspiring, the tempo and dialogue coupled together with the actors voices put modern CGI to shame, whilst it may not be one of your kids it certainly is master class in British animation and story telling that will live with you long after the film has ended
This polished masterpiece is a real classic for Raymond Brigg and animation fans.
It brings home the horrors of Nuclear War and the ultimate price paid.
This is lovely film and a real Gem for the DVD massive.
