An adaptation of EM Forster's novel brought to the screen, not by Messrs Merchant and Ivory, but by the team responsible for the Brideshead Revisited TV drama. It's a classy story about earthy passion and xenophobia, with Helen Mirren as the strong-willed, widowed Englishwoman, Lilia Herriton, who falls in love with Tuscany and acquires a young Italian lover. Back home, her frosty family sinks in shame and sends Rupert Graves to sort things out. The inevitable lashings of dappled Tuscan sunlight and some strong performances by the cast — which also includes Helena Bonham Carter (naturally) and the excellent Judy Davis, getting a second dose of Forster after A Passage to India — add up to the movie equivalent of high tea.

awful awful awful! Totally incoherent and had no flow, shame though because Bonham Carter and Rupert graves are very fine actors. REnt at your peril!
I love a classic drama, but this was a rather weak and silly story with fairly dull characters. Lots of Brit.loveys to enjoy watching (Helen Mirren overacting dreadfully) but a rainy afternoon view only.
