Good film and great for UK Roller Derby!
By YorkshireTripper (1 review) from Windsor UK , 31 Jan 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Despite Roller Derby being the fastest growing female sport in the UK right now with new leagues starting up all the time, it's still pretty much an unknown sport this side of the Atlantic, so it was with much-anticiapation we waited to see this film.
It's not a 100% accurate depiction of Derby as we know it, the film is based on banked track derby as opposed to the flat track version we play in the UK and there are a few 'illegal' moves (the clotheslining) in the film, I guess for entertainment purposes, but I'm sure plenty of derby players will relate to some element of the story.
The cast is great and the story good enough to appeal to a non-derby audience. It's also a great job for Drew Barrymore in her first work as Director.
Leagues in the US and Australia have seen a huge increase in new recruits as a direct result of seeing Whip it, UK leagues are hoping it will do the same here.

(102)easy to watch and fun too
By badgerbabe (10 reviews) from Wigan , 04 May 2013Despite being a tad predictable I thou roughly enjoyed this film. It was funny and quirky and had a bit of a message. Its an easy film to watch with our friends whilst eating pizza and drinking beer.- Was this review helpful to you?

Go Girl!
By gnlincoln (13 reviews) , 23 Jan 2013Whip It, Drew Barrymores amiable directorial debut, follows an almost identical plotline to Bend It Like Beckham to denote the female rite of passage from child to independent womanhood but with roller derby standing in for football as the sport of choice. Perhaps not surprisingly though, in view of the directors own hardcore childhood, its protagonist, Bliss, (Ellen Page), a 17 year-old from a small town in Texas, is a rather more full-blooded character than Kyra Knightleys. While the script can hardly be said to cover new ground, Page and a great cast (including Barrymore in a self-effacing supporting role) are excellent, the film has energy and wit and manages to make a few affirmative points about female aspirations along the way. There are echoes, too, of Breaking Away, Peter Yates warm-hearted, male rite of passage movie from 1979 about a restless quartet of blue-collar teenagers in Bloomington, Indiana who come of age through a cycle race against their more privileged peers from the local university. Daniel Stern, one of the young men in that film plays Pages genial father in this. Roller derby itself is apparently not new but in this incarnation appears to be a fearsome contact sport in which just about anything goes. A more ambitious film might have made something more of the contrast between the affirmative impact of roller derby on its young, female participants and the sports leering, predominantly male, audience but that should not get in the way of enjoying a positive, warm-hearted film in which all concerned appear to have really enjoyed themselves enormously.- Was this review helpful to you?

Omg I lol'd so hard.
By thetopbestfilmreviews (1 review) , 11 Aug 2012Definitely one of my favourite films. The passion that the actors & actress' have put into this film gives it so much potential. I could watch this film over and over again, And It could make me laugh EVERY TIME! Definitely a good show from Ellen Page. And the romance in the film gives it a wonderful image of how the ending would turn out! I honestly would recommend this this to everyone I know, Because I know that they will definitely not get bored of it.- Was this review helpful to you?
