Good film and great for UK Roller Derby!By YorkshireTripper (1 review) from Windsor UK , 31 Jan 2010
[Highly rated reviewer]Despite Roller Derby being the fastest growing female sport in the UK right now with new leagues starting up all the time, it's still pretty much an unknown sport this side of the Atlantic, so it was with much-anticiapation we waited to see this film.
It's not a 100% accurate depiction of Derby as we know it, the film is based on banked track derby as opposed to the flat track version we play in the UK and there are a few 'illegal' moves (the clotheslining) in the film, I guess for entertainment purposes, but I'm sure plenty of derby players will relate to some element of the story.
The cast is great and the story good enough to appeal to a non-derby audience. It's also a great job for Drew Barrymore in her first work as Director.
Leagues in the US and Australia have seen a huge increase in new recruits as a direct result of seeing Whip it, UK leagues are hoping it will do the same here.

Roller Derby FunBy Mindhorn (7 reviews) from Carnforth , 20 Sep 2013Whip It is a standard coming of age story set against a sporting background, this time its a beauty pageant queen who wants to become a roller derby poster girl but is reluctant to go against her mothers wishes. So nothing much new here but there is enough charm, fun and a great central performance that makes this more than an average movie. Ellen Page is adorable, Barrymore and Lewis are crazy and Marcia Gay Harden is excellent as the forceful mother trying to live her dreams through her daughter. Fallon and Stern provide the laughs as a commentator and the much maligned coach. OK, the roller derby scenes are a little clunky and samey. And the story progresses in a rather predictable manner but girls will love it and guys wont mind sitting through it.
Drew Barrymore definitely has her skates on for her directorial debutBy twosoddingcats (269 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 27 Aug 2013Ellen Page lives in a small town and is desperate for some excitement and stumbles upon the girls roller blading derby in Austin (the film wasnt filmed in Texas at all- my ownly bug bear as I have been to Texas). She soon learns its way more fun than entering the beauty pageants she competes in for her mothers happiness. Fellow team mates include Drew Barrymore and Kristen Wiig and rival Juliette Lewis. Will she be able to keep competing or will her parents block her (they are too old fashioned to allow her to hang out with girls with tattoos!). Also, is Oliver in the rock band going to come through for her or is he just a cliché as soon as he hits the road with his band. What do you think. Great fun. Loved this movie.
cracking good funBy davidginsberg (113 reviews) from London , 12 Aug 2013we decided to give this Drew Barrymore directed film about female roller derby players a go and it was actually very good. Ellen Page is a put upon indie kid who fed up of going to mother daughter beauty pageants decides to sign up with a misfit roller derby team. What follows is the usual tale of developing self confidence and personal epiphany but it is all done with a lot of style. Its also good to see a female focussed film that isnt crass and exploitative. The action sequences are well shot and a bit of genius was getting Jimmy Fallon cast as the roller derby MC, he is very funny. Really worth a watch.

easy to watch and fun tooBy badgerbabe (11 reviews) from Wigan , 04 May 2013Despite being a tad predictable I thou roughly enjoyed this film. It was funny and quirky and had a bit of a message. Its an easy film to watch with our friends whilst eating pizza and drinking beer.
