Neither the Juliette Greco Rank movie, nor the 1934 Jack Holt vehicle of the same name, this is the genuine article: a chunk of pure 20th Century-Fox late 1940s film noir, a highly entertaining melodrama directed by one of the past masters, the great Otto Preminger. Preminger even manages to make ace ham José Ferrer credible as a dubious hypnotist treating vivacious kleptomaniac, and quintessential cool Fox goddess, Gene Tierney. The score reunites Preminger with his Laura composer David Raksin, and the screenplay is by a group of left-wing intellectuals, including a blacklisted Ben Hecht using the pseudonym Lester Barstow. The subtext about mind control is, therefore, by no means accidental.
