A poor swansong for Merchant Ivory
By Cathy from Uckfield, East Sussex , 09 Aug 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I rushed to the cinema to see Marchant Ivorys last film (set in the 1930s). However my initial enthusiasm didnt last, as regrettably it was not the best of their films. However it is a beautiful film with wonderful performances from the actors: Natasha Richardson as the Russian countess plays her with a broken heart and broken smile and Ralph Fiennes gives such an accomplished and credible performance of a blind man living in his dark world, it is a shame that he is let down by the script. One of the disappointments for me was that there is no chemistry between the two leads, I couldnt actually image them being friends let alone lovers. The film is beautiful and haunting though. It was interesting that the film was as I am not that familiar with that history.- Was this review helpful to you?

(53)Slow, but worth a look
By monkeybum (89 reviews) from Darkest Devon, England , 15 Jun 2013A bit slow in parts, but well acted, and a very atmospheric study of a little known part of history... certainly worth 2 hours of your time...- Was this review helpful to you?

Good period film set in the 1930s
By garethw832 (6 reviews) , 12 Mar 2013My wife and I do like period films. This film is set in Shanghai in the late 30s just as the Japanese are about to invade. We both enjoyed it and found it very watchable.- Was this review helpful to you?

White Countess
By a customer , 09 Feb 2012An understated film. It was well acted and interesting following how feelings and emotion alter situations to at least some degree. It is life.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Faulty DVD
By Burnhamite (388 reviews) from BURNHAM , 25 Dec 2011What promised to be a thoroughly interesting movie turned into a nightmare after the first ten minutes because of faults with the DVD, which refused to be corrected after several wipes with a clean soft cloth.- Was this review helpful to you?

In old Shanghai
By HDX (124 reviews) from Barry, Wales , 20 Mar 2010As a blind person, Ralph Fiennes' American diplomat is almost as clever as DareDevil. Does he have onboard radar? The best thing about this film is the title though it is atmospherically photographed. Featuring an interesting time in China's history this movie could and should have been a lot better. Instead it is pretentious and in love with itself.- Was this review helpful to you?
