A poor swansong for Merchant IvoryBy Cathy from Uckfield, East Sussex , 09 Aug 2006
[Highly rated reviewer]I rushed to the cinema to see Marchant Ivorys last film (set in the 1930s). However my initial enthusiasm didnt last, as regrettably it was not the best of their films. However it is a beautiful film with wonderful performances from the actors: Natasha Richardson as the Russian countess plays her with a broken heart and broken smile and Ralph Fiennes gives such an accomplished and credible performance of a blind man living in his dark world, it is a shame that he is let down by the script. One of the disappointments for me was that there is no chemistry between the two leads, I couldnt actually image them being friends let alone lovers. The film is beautiful and haunting though. It was interesting that the film was as I am not that familiar with that history.

So refreshing in a day and age of tripe.By Peter Hughes from London , 08 Dec 2008During recent years movies contain more and more filthy language, scenes of needless sexual depravity, gang warfare, animals from outer space, ghosts and ghoules, satanism and all topped with buckets of blood and gore. WHY ? It must be what the public at large demand or producers and directors have all gone round the bend ! Thank goodness there are still classics in the mould of White Countess, although judging by some of those who have reviewed it, they are still seeking 'further pleasures' God help them !
Why are some so hard to please ?By a customer from Burnham. Bucks , 06 Dec 2008I a baffled why those who rated this movie so low. Could it be they are so used to foul language, blood & gore, they are immune to a film which in a decade or so, will certainly be termed a classic ? In my opinion White Classic is tremendous in every sense.
Solid historic epicBy a customer from Sheffield , 01 Dec 2008Sort of Casablanca crossed with The English Patient set in China. Not a classic but not a bad effort.
'White Countess'By a customer from Braintree , 27 Oct 2008I was really hoping this film was going to be along the vein of Painted Vail and Love in the time of cholora but alas no. It was very lacking in a story of such and it seemed to drag on for ever without anything really happeneing.
I was very dissapointed.
the countessBy spudleigh (30 reviews) from Guildford , 19 Sep 2008Ok film a bit slow but watchable because of Ralph Fiennes.
A nice story though.
