This American take on Gilles Mimouni's L'Appartement successfully retains the Hitchcockian thrills of the original, lifting it above the average Hollywood romantic drama. And with more than a hint of the identity issues that Hitchcock explored in Vertigo and as many twists and turns as The Big Sleep, it provides plenty of emotional wreckage en route. On the eve of a business trip to China, Matthew (Josh Hartnett) catches a fleeting glimpse of old flame Lisa (Troy's Diane Kruger), who mysteriously disappeared from his life a few years earlier. Postponing his trip and abandoning his fiancée, Matthew determines to track Lisa down, only to discover the woman he saw is really someone else (Rose Byrne). But this lady has her own agenda, and is on the point of starting a relationship with Matthew's friend Luke (played by a scene-stealing Matthew Lillard). Convoluted though this plot may seem, at least the inventive visuals from Gangster No 1 director Paul McGuigan keep you engrossed.

  • Ineffectual and confusing remake of a successful French film, which managed the intended sophistication with a style that is beyond this cast.

    Fantastic

I loved this film. Great story and will kep you thinking right up until the end. The only trouble I found was watching it with somebody who kept on asking what is going, so if your other half is like that get the pause button ready or watch it alone.

    A love story with mystery

Intriguing and somewhat tortuous plot, it requires attention although it?s not difficult to understand. The flashbacks are instrumental to this film, the story would be much less interesting if the events were presented in chronological order. The rhythm is a bit irregular, with some ups and downs, but an interesting film on the whole.

This is a remake of a French film, ?L?Apartament?, and the two scripts are practically identical, except for their endings. In the French version, the characters are more morally ambiguous whereas in the American version the baddies are bad and the goodies are the victims of the baddies. Watch any of the two versions as they are equally interesting.

As to the question of why remake an already good foreign film, well, there are many people out there who wouldn?t watch a film with subtitles even if they were paid for. Therefore, good (and commercial) ideas must be translated into English for this audience.

It could be argued that the events that form the story are quite far-fetched although not impossible, but this doesn?t detract from the interest of the film. Without giving anything away (other reviewers have already done so), we could say that the story looks more implausible in these times of conspicuous mobile phones than ten years ago, maybe.

On a separate note, the music is by Chris Martinez, who also composed the music for Solaris (the American version), a very different film which also deals (although on a secondary plane) about love at first sight.
