Before writing and directing the smash hit The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan made this film about a Catholic schoolboy who starts to question his faith after his grandfather dies, and devotes a whole school year to reassuring himself that grandad is spending eternity in good hands. Starring Joseph Cross, with Robert Loggia, Dana Delany, Denis Leary and Rosie O'Donnell among the supports, the film is intriguing enough, but is a little let down by a sugary script.
I don't usually bother reviewing films if I didn't enjoy them, but I'm making an exception for this film.
I'm afraid the only way I can desribe it is to conjure up images of 'Little House on the Prairie'. It really was very sentimental, with lots of sweet moments and 'Aaaah' scenes where the little boy shows off wisdom well beyond his years, supposedly with wit and humour. Cloying.
An indication of how director M.Night will become. A warm hearted lukewarm comedy with a meaning and twist at the end. Bit dated but worth a watch.
