This is like Regarding Henry with heart, humour and no American schmaltz. Brendan Gleeson is the naffest of Irish TV chefs, whose serial womanising is tabloid news. In the midst of divorce proceedings from his long-suffering wife (Amanda Donohoe), Gleeson slips into a coma. Awakening with amnesia he turns into a new man and gradually wins back the hearts of his wife and family. But old habits die hard, and both booze and bad feeling resurface. Father Ted director Declan Lowney handles this emotional merry-go-round with such a deft touch that the film moves you to two types of tears. The performances are excellent all round and James Nesbitt puts in a brilliant cameo as a right-wing politician.
A slight comedy of redemption.
This film is nice. There is something charming, quaint yet slightly compelling about it. The formula might not be ground-breakingly fresh, in fact its a bit of a cliche, however the cast carry off the story line really well. Its nicely produced, funny when its supposed to be, and tells the story of a love lost through selfish excesses.
Bung it on your list, its certainly better than most things on TV at the moment, and you might just find yourself surprised.
.. Not a bad movie at all, and all the better for being set in Ulster - a nice refreshing change from the USA ..
