Good but not Lynch's best

If this had been the first Lynch film I'd seen, I might well give it a higher rating, but it isn't, and I was advised to see it in preperation to re-watching 'Twin Peaks'. The imagery and ideas in this film are very good, but what puts me off is the very tired and cliched story of two rebel teenagers on the run. In 'Twin Peaks' and other Lynch works, the American teenage theme is taken and turned inside out to become a parody of itself, but in this film we are expected to sympathise with the main characters, and I'm afraid I've seen their like too many times before. This is worth watching, but Lynch can do so much better.
