Directed by actress Diane Keaton, this moving drama is set in 1930s Georgia and follows the experiences of Alice, played by True Romance's Patricia Arquette, a partially deaf epileptic imprisoned by her stepfather, who is convinced she is possessed by the Devil. Adapted by Sara Flanigan from her own book, this is subtly handled by Keaton, who began her career behind the camera with the documentary Heaven and also made 1995's Unstrung Heroes. Her direction is complemented by involving performances from a cast that includes Beau Bridges and Reese Witherspoon.

    Sweet if quite naive film

A nice little film, it has a slow-moving story which fits the setting. Acting is reasonable throughout and there is nothing to spoil the gentleness of the film overall. One you could watch with your mother!
