Will Hay had a thing about spooky crooks. Just as the villains in Oh, Mr Porter! exploited a local legend to keep snoopers at bay, so the smugglers in this corking comedy play on the myth of the headless horseman to go about their business undisturbed. The setting is a sleepy coastal berg where the police station is in danger of being closed down because Sergeant Dudfoot (Hay) claims there is no crime. Naturally, he and his accomplices (Graham Moffat and Moore Marriott) are on the fiddle. Marcel Varnel directs with brio.
an old time classic, they just dont make them like this anymore!!!!!
Whimsical humour in a country with dirt roads and country houses. Ok, so the plot is thin, but innocent humour and clean language goes a long way. Well worth watching even for the nostalgia.
a very good film i would watch it again

One of Will Hays best ones, some very funny moments, especially the catching speeding cars, one driver turns out to be the Chief Constable.
this brought back many memories when as a child, first seen not forgotten.
Will Hay's face is one of the most expressive and endearing features of the black and white years of British cinema. Because of it and the sterling support of Moore Marriot and Graham Moffat,Hay's films and this one in particular, seem like movies made today in the old style. They worked and they still work today. Marvellous stuff.
WILL HAY, GRAHAM MOFFAT, MOORE MARRIOT, WHAT A TRIO.
another will hay classic, this is a great movie with his 2 sidekicks.well worth a look .very funny.
Either you like old British comedies or you dont. If you do, dont miss this 1938 Black & White gem. The Hay-Marriott-Moffatt team are in full cry as hopeless policeman desperate to save their jobs. In the closing stages of the film theyre handcuffed together in the cab of a double-decker bus chasing after smugglers. Say no more.
Classic comedy from yesteryear.
