Set for no particular reason in an Italian village at the turn of the 19th century, this is a patchy version, with some awkward clashes in acting styles, and much of the verse-speaking disappointing; but the play gradually works its charm and the finale
This 'Scope version of 'Bottom's Story' is placed in late 19th century Tuscany, with the tone set, most successfully,... read more on Time Out
This Film made me laugh, not only were the actors bad, but the whole concept!!! I mean you didn't no where it was set, it had english countryside, with Italien Music!!! There is a scene where the 2 girls fight in mud! SOOOO not needed!!!!! Just not a good film sorry!!!!!
ignore all the bad reviews from above they don't know what talking about. this wonderful retelling of an excellent shakespear play brings it to life with wit beauty and an excellent cast. rent this.
In a word, Brilliant. Excellent cast etc couldnt fault it. Good lighthearted, fun Shakespeare film.

A pity; apes the style of Branagh's light and likeable Shakespeare but misses by a mile. Too much visual clutter and too little of the dialogue. If you look at the play bluntly it might be a comedy but it isn't NICE, and to carry it off needs careful direction and the heady flow of the original words....this version just doesn't carry it off.

I must admit i did find this quite entertaining, it was quite easy to follow, big help with my studies, quite light hearted. i did find it a little hard to swallow when Helena referred to herself as ugly, that didn't ring true. Also, the bikes were they really needed, apparently this is not unusual for shakespeare,
There are worst editions out there
Much to my liking excellent portration of shakespeares play
Dear LORD, this is poor. Okay, maybe the cast is far less stellar now than then, but the movie still reeks of "vanity project" as Michelle and (especially) Calista force Shakespeare's words into their Californian gobs, and then let any linguistic subtlety dribble down their chins while spitting out whatever remains like so much valley-speak. And Kevin Kline? Don't get me started.
Any saving graces? Well, it looks nice, Stanley Tucci shines like the bonny wee star he is, and both Rupert and Christian at least act like they understand what they're saying.
Sorry if this seems a tad unkind (I really like the play, as you may have guessed) but I urge you to rent it anyway, if only to see if you can keep the contents of your stomach intact while Ally McBeal declaims, "Oh....SPITE!". I certainly couldn't.
Generally OK except it does not really capture the magic and Calista Flockhart - Oh dear - Shakespeare's verse is not really your thing is it? Apart from her, it's not a bad version.
Ok so its near enought impossible to understand what Shakespeare was on about when you read the books, so the idea of a film is great....
And thats where is starts to go wrong, because whilst the acting and setting tells the story well, this is masked by the modern production and the fact that thety all speak in a the pure written shakepearian word
SO 15 minutes into it I was thinking 'switch it off.....'
but I stayed with it and I was glad I did. If you look past the flaws above, the book does come alive and you get to appreciaste what a great story this is (well 3 stories woven into 1). The final play at the end is fantastic and finishes off the piece in immaculate style
Push aside your pre-conceptions, stay with it, and if you have to watch it in chunks over 2 nights (as we did)
A faithful production of the original set in Italy with beautiful sceenery and a delicious sound track of Italian Opera.
