'Winchell' is a swift and compelling biopic of the legendary columnist which benefits from a superb central performance from Stanley Tucci and strong supporting turns from the great Paul Giamatti and Kevin Tighe. If it's somewhat superficial, that's because there simply isn't scope in 100 minutes to cover all the complexities of Winchell's change of mind from being an ardent anti-fascist to being an equally rampant anti-communist. Equally, his private life is skated over in a few scenes featuring the wasted Glenne Headley. But, as far as it goes, it's certainly engrossing and made with casual skill by the once-celebrated director Paul Mazursky.
The DVD is nothing special but has an acceptable full-frame presentation of this TV movie. No extras.
