Carroll Ballard brings his usual visual flair to this tale of ocean racing; it's just a shame the story is so hackneyed. Matthew Modine is the sailor, haunted by a mistake that cost his country the America's Cup, who gets another shot at wresting the trophy back from the Australians. Jennifer Grey is his old flame and the impressive support cast includes Cliff Robertson, Jack Thompson and Stellan Skarsgård. While the story remains on water Ballard doesn't put a foot wrong and there is some breathtaking racing footage, however on dry land the film flounders badly as trite sporting cliché.
Uninteresting and water-logged drama.
Good film if you are interested in sailing or aerodynamics. If not - it would not have enough sub-plot to keep you watching.
There's no denying this is cheesy American flag-waving twaddle, but if you can take all the patriotism with a pinch of irony, it is quite enjoyable. The footage of the yacht racing is nothing short of spectacular, and more than makes up for the lack writing and acting.
Basically this film is to sailing what point break is to surfing and top gun is to...er..flying fighter-jets? But if you don't like sailing I wouldn't bother.
If you like sailing this is a must. I thought the filming in this was tremendous-something extremely difficult to do with yachts racing.Story line a bit week (the romantic stuff) but highly recommended

Can't beleive I haven't seen this film before now. Thoroughly enjoyed this..but then I love sailing!

Not a weepy but a very good romance as well as full of action and interesting scenes of what its really like out on these races.

This is a film about sailing. About winning the Americas Cup to be precise. A sailing trophy. I rented it because I like films set on the oceans...so long as no-one dies.
Surprisingly my favourite parts of the film were the scenes set in the desert in Nevada where the female lead lives in some kind of bohemian community based around aeronautical engineering. I think that had something to do with the fact that a really good actor played the part of the lead aeronautics engineer out there. But all the leads played excellent characters really. Something about this film made all the leading actors look beautiful. To me anyway. I enjoyed the fact that they all played talented, creative characters.
It must be hard for actors to act around people who are not acting. When the film first started I thought the romance between the two main characters was too cloying and soppy. But that meant I didn't mourn their breaking up later on. And without the romance the film was able to get going and became a lot more interesting. But generally it's a very slow moving film.
