This is a coming - of -age treat. The film is set during the German occupation of a small Dutch town in the harsh winter months of early 1945 (hence the rather banal title). The story starts in the local woods, where two young friends find a wrecked plane. It follows the consequences of this discovery on the lives of the family of one of the boys and ends with the town's eventual liberation. The acting is convincing throughout and 'Winter in Wartime' rises above the usual cliches of this genre with the high standard of photography and pacing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Winter in wartime

It is simple, beautifully shot and is unpredictable. The characters were interestingly drawn - they did not always behave as you might expect. Also interesting to have a Dutch perspective after a run of French and German films on the same subject recently.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dissapointing movies that lacks anything much except predictability.

It shows the latter part of the war from the eyes of a youngish boy who finds himself caught up in resistance type activities during which time he experiences the confusion and darkness of the war.
The story is largely predictable, lacks any real pretence of pace, and as a result is not engrossing. It does not draw you in. It's hard to explain further without giving away spoilers. Needless to say this movie hardly even fills it's description.
If you are wanting an action movie, forget it. If you're wanting a thriller, forget it. If you want minimal story in a back water town then maybe waste 100 minutes on this one.- Was this review helpful to you?
