    Zzzzzzzzzz

I ordered this series on DVD when the Sopranos finished and I was feeling quite bereft. Someone said if you like Sopranos, you'll love this so I had high hopes but never got past the first disc. A bit of humour would have livened it up but I just found it tedious.

This is one where the hype is justified

The Wire, which ran for five seasons on HBO in the US, has been almost invisible in the UK because it was shown by an obscure cable network. Somehow it developed a following of devoted fans who all said it was not only the best thing on TV, but probably the best thing ever.

Not knowing much more about it, apart from some sort of link with 'Homicide: Life on the Street' (I think the writer?) - also set in Baltimore and for me the best cop show ever - I have just started watching series 1 on DVD and have that smug sort of feeling you have when you know you have 60 hours of pure viewing ecstacy in front of you.

Yes, the Wire is brilliant, in every way.

The plot - about the police investigation into a drug crime lord who has got away with about 10 murders - builds and untwines itself bit by bit, keeping you hooked and eager for more. The cops not only struggle against the bad guys but against the jealousy, inefficency and incompetence of the powers that be on their own side and lack of funding (they have to write up reports on manual typewriters).

The language is really strong (if you dislike that sort of thing - but if it doesn't bother you, you will enjoy the scene where McNulty and Bunk do their crime scene investigation bit muttering no words but F*** and variations).

Apart from that I can't think of any reason why not to recommend this to any sentient human being.

From the director of This Is England comes the low-budget, indie, mockumentary, Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee. Seen through the eyes of director Shane Meadows and his cast and crew, this hilarious comedy caper charts the success of wannabe music mogul, Le Donk and his side-kick rapper Scor-zay-zee. We sat down with actor Paddy Considine (Le Donk), rapper Scor-zay-zee and Shane Meadows to talk characters, comedy and the Arctic Monkeys.
