The best television show ever produced. That may sound like hyperbole, but this show is on the level with great literature. I would compare it to the great works of Charles Dickens. Though it details Baltimore, it has a lot to say about how any city functions. Outstanding in every way.
When we talk about 'good television' we are comparing one show to another. The Wire is the closest you will ever come to seeing a serial drama which can be compared with other art forms. The attempt to create an involved, original story on tv , produced to such a high standard reminds me of Stephen Poliakoff. However, even he hasn't made the attempt to sustain this level of excellence over a number of years. Even the adaptations of Dickens, Austen, Trollope, name who you will, cannot claim this intricacy, this confidence, nor indeed this level of pay-off for the audience.
In the same way that the creators of The X-Files spoke about wanting to create a movie every week, the creators of The Wire speak about wanting to create a novel over a season. And, boy, have they hit the money. It's breathtaking. The big success for me in the third season was the introduction and character arc for Dennis. Just trust me.
By the end of the third season, we have seen the characters evolve and re-align themselves. Several go through catharsis and resolution, several are dead, others are redeemed. Your love for characters such as Dennis, Carver, McNulty, Daniels, Bubbs, Omar even Avon, String, Prop Joe and Slim - and your hatred for Marlo and Burrell to name but two - will be plentifully rewarded.
I'm holding my breath til they release season 4.
Nothing more to say...
Essential.
This is the first TV series I have watched since I can remember that actually makes me discuss it and consider it in between watching it. It feels like something has come back to TV Drama when you watch this show. It feels like TV might have been once, or rather how it should be now to be properly engaging. What a pleasure...

This is the best season yet of this brilliant crime drama. So good it defies all stereotypes usually associated with crime fiction. RENt it now.
I feel like a gushing little girl whenever I tell anyone about how stupifyingly excellent this HBO series is, I can hear myself going but am unable to stop the torrent of superlatives gushing from my mouth like rantpuke. The plotting is reminiscent to a novel in that it unfolds rather slowly at first and takes time to lovingly render its characters in 3D believability and develop a truly coherent plot structure. The acting is uniformly ace and some of the throw away oneliners are gut achingly funny. As an expose of how the machinations of politics work it is a real eyeopener too. Watch it. watch it. Watch it. You will never look at television the same way again.
I have started to get this burning evengelical zeal in my eyes whenever I start to talk to one of the unbelievers about the pure and utter brilliance of The Wire. Series 3 has only made me more convinced of my divine mission to corner scared-looking people at parties and tell them what they should be doing with their viewing time. Put aside your Sopranos box-set, my friends, and watch this and weep (with joy)...

Well we all know the brilliance of 'the West Wing', 'the Sopranos' and 'ER' (at least the first five series anyway). Hidden away, underpublicised and quite possibly superior to them all is 'the Wire'. Quite frankly the most realistic TV drama with long, rewarding storylines and totally believable characters, this is as good as it gets. I can't recommend this series enough to poeple who are sick of dumbed down, generic and cliched television.
all I can do is agree with the other reviewers. drama simply does not get better than this.
Compelling to watch, great storylines, realistic characters and just too short! I wished there were more than 12 episodes to watch.
I'm definitely a fan.
